ANZ suspended its Internet banking system for two days last week and again over the weekend after customer demand exceeded its processing capacity.

An ANZ spokesperson said demand for online banking had far exceeded the bank's expectations, with 20,000 customers registered. ANZ had prepared for migrating 8000 new customers to the new system in the first month. It is signing up around 500 new Internet banking customers every day, the spokesperson said.

The system's capacity has now been increased to cater for any number of users.
