Communications solution for mining provider spans six continents

Technology and services provider for the mining and metallurgical industries, Outotec, is consolidating its global communications infrastructure which spans six continents.

The company has a number of offices in Australia including Sydney, Melbourne and Perth and the project's aim is faster connectivity for 30 of the organisation's key locations.

Verizon Business has been selected to provide an IP-based, fully managed, secure network.

Some business critical applications will be co-located at a Verizon Business hosting site in the United States, complementing Outotec's own data centres in Australia and Finland.

In addition to a full-time dedicated Internet connection, the company will utilise Internet scanning services to protect Outotec's e-mail system from spam and viruses.

With headquarter in Finland, Outotec employs approximately 2,100 employees worldwide and is a market and technology leader in three key business divisions -metals processing, base metals and minerals processing.

It was listed as an independent company in 2006 when it was spun out from its parent, Outokumpu Oyj.

Because of the global nature of its business, Outotec decided to reassess its global network infrastructure to ensure it could support its current and future internal and external collaboration requirements.

The company's vice president of IT, Petri Tanskanen, said the decision was made to consolidate its network infrastructure and management with a single global communications partner to achieve both cost and management efficiencies.

He said the company already had a relationship with Verizon Business when it was part of Outokumpu.

"We reviewed our options after the tendering process, it became clear that Verizon Business was still the right choice for us as we wanted a one-stop shop for all our requirements across the globe," he added.

Tanskanen said network maintenance is not the company's core business but its infrastructure needed to be in safe hands.

Verizon Business sales director, Pekka Inkinen, said for global companies like Outotec secure infrastructure is vital to keep operations running.
