CSIRO commits to Tassie IT research

The CSIRO now has a dedicated ICT research presence in Tasmania with the opening today of the Tasmanian Information and Communication Technologies Centre (TasICTC).

The $30 million centre will conduct research across a variety of areas including water resource information systems, tailored health information delivery and marine observations networks.

TasICTC is a venture between the federal and Tasmanian governments through the Intelligent Island Program, and CSIRO which agreed in 2006 to establish the centre. Employment of ICT researchers began after that agreement and the centre now houses 30 research staff, according to CSIRO spokesperson Joanne Finlay.

CSIRO’s Tasmanian ICT Centre is also working with the University of Tasmania through a joint doctoral scholarship program. Over the life of the centre, 10 post-grad students from the university will work with the centre’s researchers.
