Communication technology vendor Motorola Thursday announced it had appointed Mike Zafirovski as its new president and chief operating officer.

Zafirovski replaces Edward Breen. Motorola on Thursday confirmed Breen had been appointed chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of conglomerate Tyco International Ltd.

After confirming Breen's departure to Tyco, Motorola announced on Thursday that Christopher Galvin, Motorola's chairman and CEO, "will assume the additional responsibilities of Chief Operating Officer until a successor is named."

A few hours later, Zafirovski was named as Motorola's new president and COO.

Zafirovski currently is Motorola's executive vice president and president of the company's Personal Communications Sector. He will continue to hold those positions until a successor is named, the company said in a statement.

The appointment follows Motorola's July 17 announcement of a net loss of US$2.32 billion, or $1.02 per share, for the second quarter of fiscal 2002.
