Samsung launches global mobile app contest

$US330,000 prize money up for grabs

Samsung Electronics has jumped on the mobile app store bandwagon, launching its 2009 Global Developer Contest in a bid to generate new applications for Samsung smartphones.

Samsung launched its Applications Store in the UK, France and Italy in September and the contest is aimed at increasing the number and quality of applications available. The vendor has yet to launch the store in Australia, but local developers are being encouraged to participate.

The contest, which runs until December 10th and is open to developers globally, is for the Samsung OmniaICON and is open for applications in English and Italian. The vendor has put up $US330,000 in total prize money for winning applications, which will be selected by the end of December 2009. The winning apps will be made available for download, either for free or to purchase, on the Samsung Application Store site.

Samsung said winners would be able to maintain a partnership with Samsung Mobile through a variety of future opportunities, such as participating in Samsung’s mobile programmer support program.
