CommVault launches Cloud-optimised software

Data protection and storage company, CommVault, is shipping an integrated cloud storage connector for its Simpana software that will enable customers to move on-premises backup and archive data into, and out of, private and public cloud storage.

The product is aimed at companies looking to reduce internal IT costs and tier infrequently accessed backup, archiving data from on-premises disk and tape storage into cloud storage.

The platform and product architecture is designed to work with all types of data stored in the cloud, including Oracle and SAP databases, Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint systems as well as vistualised data. Customers can deploy embedded data duplication and encryption modules and can add the Simpana search function to index data prior to sending it to cloud storage.

Simpana utilise REST over HTTP connectivity to ensure integration with Application Programming Interfaces from Amazon S3, EMC Atmos, Iron Mountain’s Archive Services Platform, Microsoft Azure and Nirvanix SDN.

Plans to integrate with EMC and Iron Mountain are currently underway.

Existing customers with active maintenance contracts can download the CommVault Service Pack and integrate with CommVault’s cloud service provider partners to allow data tiering to the cloud.

Garter Research vice president of storage technologies and strategies, Dave Russell, said geographically distant data storage provides the best business continuity outcomes for enterprise.

“The best practice is to have multiple geographically dispersed copies of data to ensure the highest level of protection and data availability,” he said.

In August 2009 Robert Hammer, Commvault CEO, outlined the company’s future in cloud storage and its importance to businesses around the world. Since then the company’s revenue has grown 18 per cent.
