Updated: SBS secures 3D World Cup rights

SBS is likely to announce it will broadcast the World Cup in 3D

SBS will broadcast some FIFA 2010 World Cup games in 3D, including Australia versus Germany on June 13.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) last week announced that both the Nine Network and SBS will conduct "scientific trials of 3D TV" in metropolitan areas around the country in a two month period between 19 May and 19 June this year.

The Nine Network has already confirmed it will be the first to make a 3D broadcast in Australia when it shows the first of three Rugby League State of Origin on 26 May. All three matches will be broadcast in 3D.

After interviewing communications minister, Senator Stephen Conroy on The World Game last night where the minister said he will allow SBS to broadcast games on both SBS 1 and SBS 2 at the same time, the broadcaster confirmed it would also be showing the matches in 3D.

The Nine Network and SBS will share a single channel devoted to 3D broadcasting for the trial, rather than using separate spectrum or interfering with either of the networks' existing channels.

SBS will host the channels in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth, while the Nine Network will host it in Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle and Wollongong.

The licenses are a temporary allocation of spectrum by the ACMA, with no current plans for a permanent allocation or agreement.

Sony has announced it will film 25 of the 64 matches of this year's World Cup in South Africa using 3D-capable cameras. Prior to SBS' announcement, only US broadcaster ESPN had committed to broadcasting the matches in 3D live.
