AusCert 2010: Hanmore back to CERT

Ex-AusCert manager leaves Microsoft for CERT Australia

After less than a year at Microsoft, security officer Karl Hanmore has left the Redmond giant to return to work for Australia's national cyber security team.

But his operations post is at CERT Australia, understood to be a rival of his former employer AusCert where he worked as operations manager.

CERT Australia became the country's official national Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) after the organisation was announced in November last year.

Hanmore told Computerworld Australia he left his US post at the Microsoft's Security Response Center to return to national defence and be closer to family.

"There is only so much you can do in the corporate sector," Hanmore said.

Hanmore had a five-year stint at the Bank of Queensland before joining AusCert in 2005, then Microsoft in May last year.

CERT Australia commenced operations in January and works with the Cyber Security Operations Centre and AusCERT.
