Vocus to open second Melbourne data centre

Vocus Communications (ASX: VOC) has announced that its second Melbourne data centre (MEL 2) will go live in September 2013.
Speaking at the CommsDay Wholesale and Data Centre Summit in Sydney, Vocus CEO James Spenceley told delegates that the Collins Street facility is located in Melbourne’s CBD.
“We had a major issue because our first Melbourne facility [MEL 1] was full and has been for years,” he said. “If we needed a second site, then telcos and our other wholesale customers would also need to use that facility.”
MEL 2 is 1280 square metres with 400 racks and 2 megawatts of power. According to Spenceley, the power usage effectiveness (PUE) has been measured at 1.3.
The data centre will make use of hot aisle containment with free air cooling.
“Melbourne is a fantastic site because the average air temperature is a lot lower than Brisbane or Sydney,” he said. “We anticipate that for 70 per cent of the year, the facility will use free air cooling.”

Spenceley also announced that the company has developed an iPhone app called Vocus View. This will allow customers who have taken rack space in a Vocus data centre to check temperatures, maintenance and PUE levels.
“It takes a whole lot of pain out of opening a laptop and searching through emails to look for maintenance notifications,” he said.
The app will also notify customers if their rack door has been left open.
