TPG launches unlimited 100Mbps plans for $69.99

The telco increased its domestic fibre network by more than 800km in the 2013 FY and now covers more than 3800km

TPG has announced fibre to the basement plans offering up to 100Mbps for $69.99 per month.

The plan includes home phone line rental, unlimited local and standard national calls to landlines, 100 minutes of international calls and a Wi-Fi modem on 24-month contracts.

TPG also offers unlimited data plans on the National Broadband Network (NBN), with a $69.99 per month plan on the base level NBN speed of 12/1Mbps.

Fibre to the basement runs fibre to the basement of buildings and uses existing copper within the building to deliver the last mile connection.

Mike Quigley, outgoing chief executive at NBN Co, has previously said NBN Co looked into delivering the NBN via fibre to the basement and placing a DSLAM in the basement to connect multi-dwelling units to the fibre optic network.

“That has certain attractions, obviously because you don’t get into separation questions – structural separation issues – because normally that copper is owned by the building owner,” Quigley said.

“There’s no question there’s a saving to be had by not [doing all] fibre [in] a multi-dwelling unit, but there are some other issues that need to be dealt with, such as how do you ensure you get analogue voice, which is a tricky issue.”

The telco increased its domestic fibre network by more than 800km in the 2013 FY and now covers more than 3800km.

It plans to expand its fibre network, with around 500,000 units currently in design. TPG said it will target Sydney, Melbourne Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth with speeds up to 100Mbps for units.

TPG today reported a 64 per cent increase in net profit after tax to $149.2 million for the year ended 31 July, 2013. Revenue increased 9 per cent to $724.5 million.

Mobile customers increased by 105,000 to 360,000, while broadband customers increased 76,000 to 671,000.

During the financial year TPG purchased 20MHz of spectrum in the 2.5GHz band for $13.5 million in the Digital Dividend. TPG said the purchase would be used to offer value-adding products to its existing product offering and will be available for us from October 2014.
