Cloudmark partners with Optus to protect customers

Vendor’s software will be used to block email, SMS spam

Security software vendor Cloudmark has announced that it has been selected by Optus to stop email and SMS spam from reaching subscribers.

According to the vendor, its software was chosen as it can block 30 per cent more email spam than competing products.

Cloudmark Asia Pacific general manager David Somerville said the software will help reduce the number of support calls received by the company’s customer service teams.

“With the rapid expansion of 4G across Australia, there is a greater need to ensure that checks and systems are in place to create a secure environment,” he said in a statement.

Research from the company’s global threat database found that Australia ranks 33rd in the world for all email spam sent, despite Australia being the 53rd most populated country in the world. Approximately 6.8 per cent of emails sent from Australia were flagged as spam in 2013.

Cloudmark’s database also revealed that SMS spam is increasing in the Asia Pacific. According to the research, 70 per cent of incoming SMS spam was advance fee/up-front payment and lottery scams.
