IBM declines to comment on further job cuts

IBM Australia has declined to confirm a report on the ABC News website claiming that the company was likely to cut more local jobs in early 2014.

The report claimed the figure would be up to 1000 positions by early next year. When asked by Computerworld if the report was correct, an IBM spokesperson said “IBM does not comment on rumour or speculation.”

In June this year, reports surfaced that IBM would be cutting up to 1500 Australian jobs, which would be sent offshore to New Zealand and Asia. At the time, the company responded by saying that transformation is an essential feature of its business model.

The ABC News report said the program to send jobs offshore to Singapore, Malaysia and Ireland was called "Project Mercury."
