AFP, NSW Cybercrime Squad arrest man for 96 fraud offences

A 23-year-old man alleged to have committed 96 offences including credit card fraud and online marketplace scams has been arrested in Brisbane by the NSW Police Fraud and Cybercrime Squad and Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Some of the other alleged offences include forging of driver licences and unauthorised transfer of funds from bank accounts. Police have estimated the total amount of fraud at over $1.8 million.

AFP officers also used a search warrant to access one of the man’s relative's homes in Melbourne. They seized a large amount of cash and electronic skimming devices.

According to the AFP, the man appeared in court in Brisbane on 25 February, and will be extradited to Sydney today.

In February 2013, the man was arrested and charged by NSW Police for fraud offences but failed to show up at court, resulting in NSW Police issuing 14 warrants for his arrest.

This week’s arrest was made as part of a Fraud and Cybercrime Squad operation called Strike Force Kaye which began in 2013. The operation uncovered a Sydney-based fraud syndicate which was involved in hacking and identity theft. So far, 18 people have been charged with 236 offences.
