Former News Corp chief financial officer Stephen Rue will join NBN Co's executive team, the government-owned company rolling out the National Broadband Network announced this morning.

NBN Co has also revealed that Dennis Steiger will join the organisation as chief technology and security officer. Steiger, former CTO for Shaw Communications Canada, will take up his role on 21 July.

Rue replaces departing NBN CFO Robin Payne, while Steiger replaces Gary McLaren.

Rue served as News CFO from 2003 until September last year. He has also previously served as a director at REA Group, Foxtel, and Australian Associated Press.

The new CFO will report to NBN Co's new chief executive, former Vodafone CEO Bill Morrow. Steiger will report to NBN Co COO Greg Adcock.

"Stephen is a well-credentialed senior finance executive who has managed a business through a complex and high profile transformation," Morrow said in a statement. "His transparent approach is welcome at a time NBN Co continues to accelerate on its delivery."

Rue begins his new role at the start of July, joining the new look leadership team that has been shaped first by former Telstra CEO Ziggy Switkowski who in October joined NBN Co as chairman not long after the Coalition took power and more recently by Morrow, who began his stint as CEO earlier this year.

Payne's departure as CFO was announced in April, along with those of McLaren, and Kevin Brown, who is responsible for NBN Co's agreements with Telstra and Optus.

Rue will join an executive committee that includes chief strategy officer, JB Rousselot; COO Adcock; chief customer officer, John Simon; head of legal Justin Forsell; "chief culture and transformation officer" Bradley Whitcomb; and head of regulatory affairs, Caroline Lovell.
