Hybrid cloud demand driving Australian data centre market: Equinix

More enterprises are turning to hybrid cloud environments and shifting IT workloads out of the office into the data centre, generating more demand for data centre services, according to Equinix Australia managing director Jeremy Deutsch.

“We are seeing people wanting to utilise an environment where they have the ability to use public and private cloud in a hybrid architecture,” he said.

The vendor conducted a global survey in October 2014 with 659 respondents including 101 participants from Australia. The results show 85 per cent of respondents are planning to use multiple cloud services in the next 12 months.

“When people are doing that, they need a [data centre] location where they can access more than one cloud provider and leverage a platform that is going to give them secure access to those cloud providers,” said Deutsch.

According to Frost and Sullivan, Australia’s data centre market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 13.9 per cent from 2013 to 2020, reaching revenues of $1,737 million by 2020.

Equinix is riding this demand and recently announced that it had signed up 30 new customers in its Melbourne data centre, ME1.

These include cloud providers Bulletproof and Servers Australia as well as network provider Azzuri Communications. The companies have connected to Equinix’s cloud ecosystem in ME1.

“Enterprises are looking to be in closer proximity to their customers to reduce latency and improve application performance for their end-users. By deploying in Equinix, companies can do just that." explained Deutsch.
