VMware's vCloud Air arrives in Australia

VMware’s hybrid cloud service, vCloud Air, is now available from a Telstra data centre in Melbourne.

Launched 18 months ago in the US, the service will allow customers to create and build hybrid cloud environments.

Built on vSphere, it offers two infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) compute offerings - Dedicated Cloud and Virtual Private Cloud.

The launch of the service means data can be stored under Australian compliance and data protection regulations. At this stage, the Telstra data centre will also serve New Zealand-based customers.

“Australian businesses will have the ability to seamlessly extend applications into the cloud without any additional configuration, and will have peace of mind, knowing this IT infrastructure will provide a level of reliability and business continuity comparable to in-house IT,” said VMware A/NZ vice president and managing director Duncan Bennet.

Telstra CIO and executive director of cloud, Erez Yarkoni said that new and existing Telstra customers can extend or move their on-premise IT infrastructure to a public cloud.

“This is perfect for managing enterprise applications, development and testing environments, as well as disaster recovery,” he said in a statement.
