John McMillan.
Australian Information Commissioner Professor John McMillan will take on the role of NSW Ombudsman from Bruce Barbour after 30 June.
McMillan has requested an acting capacity role for two years since he is aged 65.
In the new role, he will take over responsibility for Operation Prospect, a two year investigation into bugging by the NSW Police, State Crime Commission and Police Integrity Commission. The bugging is alleged to have taken place during 1998 and 2002.
NSW Premier Mike Baird said that McMillan was chosen due to his “skills and experience” and will help ensure the state's public agencies maintain a "world class" level of performance.
“I look forward to a comprehensive report [about Operation Prospect] as soon as possible,” said Baird.
The Attorney-General’s Department has been contacted to find out if a replacement Information Commissioner will be appointed.
The federal government sought to scrap the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner in last year's budget.
However, the government is yet to pass the required legislation to ditch the OAIC.
