Telstra officially launches its national Wi-Fi network

Telstra will officially launched its national Wi-Fi network on Tuesday, with the telco dubbing the offering ‘Telstra Air’ and revealing that customers will be able to access an international network of wireless hotspots.
The wireless network is being built on hotspots attached to payphones and located in exchanges and Telstra retail stores, as well as shared connections from Telstra BigPond customers.
In return for sharing a portion of their bandwidth, customers of the telco who opt-in to the Telstra Air service get free access to Internet access at the hotspots.
Telstra revealed it has partnered with Wi-Fi provider Fon. Telstra Air members will be able to access 15 million Fon Wi-Fi hotspots overseas in 18 countries, including the UK, Spain, Brazil, Japan, France and Germany, the telco said.
Telstra last year revealed the initial details of its $100 million Wi-Fi rollout.
The telco switched on the first, payphone-based hotspots late last year.
During the network rollout, Telstra offered free access to the public. At least initially, the Wi-Fi network will be available to Telstra home broadband customers.
Earlier this year Telstra said it would add more than 1500 extra hotspots to the rollout.
