Telstra increases NBN market share

Telco’s share of NBN market climbs slightly, ACCC figures reveal

A snapshot provided by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission of National Broadband Network services reveals that Telstra continues to dominate the NBN market.

In fact Australia’s largest telco managed to increase slightly its overall market share in the quarter ending 30 June, the ACCC’s NBN Wholesale Market Indicators Report reveals.

At the end of the quarter Telstra had a 48 per cent share of the total number of active NBN services, dwarfing its nearest rival — TPG — which had a 26 per cent share. Optus captured 14 per cent of NBN services. Excluding satellite NBN services, which are not currently offered by Telstra, Telstra’s market share climbs to almost 50 per cent.

The report doesn't offer a complete picture of the state of the NBN market, however, as services are grouped by the network access seeker and so incorporate services sold by retail service providers that resell services provided via another telco.

In the quarter ending 31 March Telstra’s market share was slightly lower at 47 per cent (climbing to 49 per cent if satellite is excluded).

In total there were some 1.14 million NBN services in operation at the end of the June quarter, with more than 548,000 of them Telstra services.

The bulk of NBN services continue to be based on fibre to the premises (FTTP). There were some 865,000 FTTP services at the end of the quarter, compared to 18,000 fibre to the building (FTTB) and 102,000 fibre to the node (FTTN) services. There were close to 120,000 fixed wireless services in operation, and just over 31,000 services on the NBN Interim Satellite Service.

This edition of the Wholesale Market Indicators Report is the second to be published.

“Future reports will also include data on NBN’s HFC [hybrid fibre-coaxial] services,” the ACCC’s chairperson, Rod Sims, said in a statement.

“Over time, we expect these quarterly reports will provide information on trends related to the take up of various NBN services and provide an overview of the wholesale market.”

NBN this morning announced it had begun offering the first commercial services over the HFC assets it is obtaining from Telstra. NBN announced commercial availability of HFC services in Ocean Reef in Western Australia.

NBN launched its first HFC services in the Brisbane suburb of Redcliffe in June. Those services are based on HFC infrastructure formerly owned by Optus.
