Vodafone acquires Lebara’s Australian mobile business

VHA will keep Lebara Mobile alive

Vodafone Hutchison Australia has purchased the local mobile business assets of Lebara, the telco announced today.

Vodafone will operate the Lebara Mobile brand in Australia.

The mobile virtual network operator has operated on Vodafone’s network since its 2009 launch in Australia.

“Lebara Mobile has built up a strong brand presence and loyal customer base in Australia, and we see opportunities to grow the business further,” said Vodafone chief strategy officer Dan Lloyd.

“It will also be business as usual for all of Lebara Mobile’s employees, and customer service agents, who will continue to provide care to Lebara Mobile customers via existing service channels,” the telco executive said in a statement.

The UK-headquartered Lebara Group was founded in 2001.

VHA recorded a loss of $163 million for the six months ending 30 June — improving on the $260 million loss the company reported for the same period in 2015.

Total customers on Vodafone’s network grew 4.5 per cent year on year to 5.5 per cent. The increase was on the back of a 28.6 per cent jump in MVNO customers — largely due to the migration of TPG customers to the network under a deal announced in September.
