NEC to Unveil World's Strongest Encryption System

NEC Corp. says it will unveil a new encryption technology on Monday that it claims to be the world's strongest.

Nobuhiko Koike, general manager (computing) of the company's C&C Media Research Laboratories will provide details of the new system, which is a development on an encryption system announced in 1997, a company spokesman said.

That system did more than just protect data through the use of stronger keys:

It sought to confuse would-be hackers by generating numerous fake keys. This method meant an attack on the system would require the hacker to either determine which was the correct key or break numerous keys [See "NEC Develops 128-Bit Encryption Technology," Oct. 22, 1997].
