AT&T on Tuesday said it has agreed to buy Alltel’s U.S. wireless operations, including licenses, network assets, retail stores and about 585,000 subscribers, for $780 million in cash. Technically, AT&T is buying the operation from the lesser known Atlantic Tele-Network, Inc. (ATNI).
The proposed AT&T-T-Mobile merger has many different groups standing athwart recent telecom history and yelling, "Stop!"
Newly promoted Verizon COO Lowell McAdam had a short but productive tenure as head of Verizon's wireless business, which has added 25.5 million subscribers since 2007. Looking forward, Verizon is grooming McAdam to eventually take over as CEO when current Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg retires from the company.
