• Meltdown! New Periscope iPhone app live streams ice cream factory's end

  The <a href="http://www.metrowestdailynews.com/article/20150116/News/150117014">teardown of a 50-plus-year-old ice cream plant</a> across from Network World's Framingham, Mass., headquarters today practically screamed to be live streamed via Twitter's new <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id972909677">Periscope app for the iPhone</a>. So I took my iPhone 5 into the parking lot during lunch and brought the action live to a whoever happened to stumble across it.

• Apple previews new Photos app to OS X developers

  Apple has released the first preview of Photos, its iPhoto replacement, to registered developers.

• Microsoft struts YouTube-style video streaming for enterprises

  Microsoft on Tuesday announced Office 365 Video, a YouTube-like streaming service where enterprises and large organizations can post in-house video content for communication and training.

• Apologetic Microsoft unleashes Xim globally for Android, Win Phone

  Apparently caught off guard by strong demand for Xim, a mobile photo-sharing app from its Fuse Labs researchers, a regretful Microsoft has released it globally for Android and Windows Phone, while promising iOS support is due soon.

• Google's YouTube buys Directr video app and makes it free

  Google's YouTube division has bought the Directr movie-making app for smartphones and will offer it free.

• Netgear Nighthawk X6 router introduces concept of tri-band wireless

  At the CE Week New York event today, Netgear announced its new Nighthawk X6 AC3200 Tri-Band Wi-Fi Router (model R8000), featuring 802.11ac wireless connectivity and using Broadcom's new 5G Wi-Fi Xstream platform. The $300 device is now available for pre-order online, with availability expected later this year.

• Christmas in summer: Rounding up Gadgety Goodness in NYC

  The temperatures were hovering near 80, but there definitely was a "Christmas in June" vibe at last night's Digital Experience in New York, sponsored by Pepcom. More than 50 companies were showing off their latest digital products to the press, hoping to get some additional eyeballs and coverage as we start preparing the end-of-year gift guides and other such features. The event was also a prelude to next week's CE Week in New York, in which we'll see even more gadgets and gizmos.

  The Mozilla Foundation and graphic rendering technology company Otoy have built a video codec, written with JavaScript and WebGL, that would eliminate the need for using plug-ins to view video in a browser.

• Hulu Plus comes to Nintendo 3DS, Wii; 3DS gets 3D video recording

  Nintendo 3DS and Wii console owners will get a number of updates in late 2011, including Hulu Plus on both devices and 3D video recording on the 3DS, Nintendo announced Friday. Hulu Plus will land on the Wii and 3DS by the end of the year, while Nintendo promises 3DS owners they will be able to record up to ten minutes of 3D video by the end of November.
