Optus' Sydney data centre to bring traffic to a halt

Installation process will require complete closure of Harris street

Traffic on a major Sydney city street will come to a halt in the new year as Optus installs its third Emergency Power Generator (EPG) onto the roof of its Ultimo Data Centre.

A crane will lift the EPG onto the roof, requiring the complete closure of Harris Street in Ultimo from 10:00pm Saturday until 10:00am Sunday January 6.

The installation and closure of Harris street has been approved by the RTA.

An Optus spokesperson confirmed the installation, saying it will "provide increased redundancy power to both the site and to customers utilizing Optus EXPAN Co-Location services".

"The generator will support the growth of both Optus and customer infrastructure within the data centre. While the centre is experiencing strong growth, there are no immediate plans to expand the centre," the spokesperson added.

Access to the data centre will be restricted during the installation, with extra security in operation.

Optus said customers requiring emergency access during the crane setup and demobilisation times "may" be accommodated.

But while the crane is lifting the generator, access will be denied to everyone.
