Huawei today launched a new cut-price Android-based handset on Optus' network. The Huawei IDEOS X1, which will retail for $99, runs version 2.2 of Google's Android platform.
The Huawei IDEOS X1 is equipped with a 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 320x240 pixels. It supports HSDPA connectivity for download speeds of up to 7.2 megabits per second.
In late 2010, Huawei launched the $159 IDEOS (U8150), which was sold through Australia Post and Crazy John's. At the time, the $159 U8150 was the cheapest Android handset on the Australian market.
Telstra currently sells the Smart-Touch, an Android-based smartphone built by ZTE, for $99. Like the IDEOS X1 it has a 2.8-inch touchscreen; however, it runs the older, 2.1 version of Android.
