NextDC flicks switch on Brisbane data centre

NextDC (ASX:NXT) has received building certification for its Brisbane data centre, and expects customers to start using the facility within weeks

Data centre start-up NextDC (ASX:NXT) has announced the opening of its Brisbane-based facility, B1.

The company on Monday revealed that it has received a key document from a final building inspection, and now expects to start moving in pre-committed customers in the next few weeks.

NextDC will offer racks, blocks and private suites to customers of the facility.

In June, the company revealed it had signed up seven fibre operators — AAPT, Nextgen Networks, SingTel's (ASX:SGT) Optus, PIPE Networks, Primus Telecom, Telstra (ASX:TLS) and Vocus (ASX:VOC) — to offer connectivity services including internet transit and interstate capacity for the facility's customers.

NextDC is also currently establishing facilities in Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Sydney. Both the Melbourne and Canberra centres are expected to be operational this financial year, while the other two should follow in the first half of FY13.

The company reported a $1.67 million net loss for FY11, due to start-up costs incurred in the build-out.

NextDC has been raising funds for the facilities from avenues including a $50 million placement announced in August.

NXT shares grew 2.16 per cent to $1.655 on Monday, the day the opening was announced.
