HP signs firewall, VPN deals

Hewlett-Packard has penned an agreement with Aventail and Axent to allow HP to resell Aventail's virtual private network (VPN) technology and Axent's Raptor Firewall as part of HP's Praesidium Web security product line, according to the companies.

The agreement with both companies is intended to allow HP to broaden its range of security offerings, even to new platforms the company has not supported before from Microsoft and Sun, an HP representative said.

"We're also providing products beyond HP/UX. The Aventail and Raptor products will work with HP/UX," said Roberto Medrano, general manager for Internet security operations at HP. "[But], in particular, we are also selling the NT products and the Solaris products from these vendors. We will sell those where the customers decide to have NT product of some kind."

Both Aventail's VPN and Axent's Firewall products will integrate with HP's Virtual Vault system to provide greater security capabilities, according to Medrano.

"We obviously want to secure the virtual corporation as a whole, and now we are able to provide all the solutions," Medrano said.

The Aventail VPN client/server bundle supports HP-UX, Windows NT, Sun Solaris, AIX, BSDI, Digital Unix, and Linux with pricing starting at $US7995. The Axent Raptor Firewall runs on HP-UX, Windows NT, and Sun Solaris, with pricing ranging from $2500 for up to 25 users to $19,000 for unlimited users on Unix system platforms, and from $3995 for up to 100 users to $12,500 for unlimited users on Windows NT platforms. Both products will be available from HP on December 1.
