Symantec warns virulent virus headed Down Under

The Symantec AntiVirus Centre has confirmed a polymorphic virus with e-mail worm capability is spreading itself across Europe and is expected to reach Australia overnight.

The virus, W32.Magistr.24876@mm, is particularly dangerous as the message may have up to six attachments and up to 60 randomly generated subject lines with very few characters, according to the company.

This makes identification of the virus difficult because subject headings are never consistent, Symantec warned.

When launched or executed the worm uses Microsoft Outlook and Windows Address book to e-mail itself to all recipients in the user's address book.

Administrators are also being advised to filter attachments with a VBS extension immediately.
