Digicor readies for Super Micro blades

Super Micro's new blade servers will provide extra choice for resellers in the otherwise tier 1 dominated market

Digicor is preparing for the release of Super Micro Computer's first blade servers, saying the new products would strengthen its product line up and provide welcome competition in the blade server market.

Super Micro announced the SuperBlade product line at this month's Computex trade show in Taiwan. It will initially offer quad-core Intel Xeon-based servers, followed by AMD-based versions in Q3. Digicor director and national sales manager, Richard Huang, said the new hardware would be a core part of its business.

"This blade server [line] will definitely increase the opportunity for Digicor and the channel overall to really provide solutions to the customers," he said. "At this stage the blade server market is dominated by the tier-ones. With the introduction of Super Micro we are hoping to create an alternative [with better features as far as we know] to the channel."

According to figures from research firm, Gartner, the blade server market is dominated by HP and IBM followed by Dell and Sun.

Huang said the first servers would ship in about a month's time but he was keeping his options open on how it would go about distributing them.

"We might make the blade servers available but may not necessarily stock them at this stage because a blade server is very much project-based," he said. "At this point in time, particularly at this early stage, we will make pricing and specs available to the channel so they can have certain reference to work on. And for any realistic project we can bring in samples [of the SuperBlades] for the resellers."
