Defence to upgrade to SuperServers

20 SuperServers will help Defence update its high density distributed computing environment

Defence is to bulk up its distributed computing environment with a number of high end SuperMicro SuperServers.

In tender documents, Defence indicated it was looking to procure 20 such servers which would conform to its “unique high density distributed computing requirements".

“We have previously tested the following system and found that is meets our requirements,” the terse tender documents read.

Defence’s essential requirements for the servers include:

  1. Use of Intel Nehalem X5550 CPU’s (or higher equivalent Intel CPU).
  2. Density of 8 physical CPU’s per two standard rack units.
  3. Dual redundant power supplies.
  4. Minimum three SATA 3.5” hard disk drive capability per 2 CPU’s.
  5. 12GB DDR3 memory per 2 CPU’s.
  6. Installed 3.5” Enterprise Class 500GB hard disk per 2 CPU’s.
  7. Remote Management Interface (IPMI) using ethernet interface.
  8. Maximum height of any one component of two standard rack units.

Defence also requires Supermicro SuperServer Chassis SC827T-R1200B, 4x X8DTT-F Motherboards, 8x Intel X5550 CPUs, 24 x 2GB DDR3 memory, 4 x 500GB WD RE3 drives and dual 1200W high-efficiency redundant power supplies.

Earlier this month Defence indicated it was to shortly commence refreshing its core management information system for personnel management, personnel management key solution (PMKeyS), in an effort to better manage risk and add “significant and sustainable benefits” to the organisation.
