NSW to launch digital identity for government services

New Service NSW digital ID to launch in September

Service NSW will launch a digital profile for state government services that will minimise the number of times that people have to hand over their personal details.

New South Wales finance minister Dominic Perrottet revealed yesterday that the new functionality will be available in September.

"One of the frustrations of dealing with government today is being asked for the same details multiple times by different departments," Perrottet said in a statement.

"But good service means customers should only ever have to 'tell us once'."

"This is why we are launching a new online account function through Service NSW for customers to manage their details online," the minister said.

"This online account will be a cornerstone capability to simplify access to government transactions and act as a platform for additional digital services which will be added over time."

Communications minister Malcolm Turnbull said earlier this week he was interested in seeing government agencies at federal, state and local level using the federal government's myGov platform to provide unified access to online services.

myGov was launched in 2013. When the government announced in January the creation of the Digital Transformation Office it said that myGov would be made available to state and local governments.

The NSW 2015-16 budget included $362 million for Service NSW, for the roll-out of 27 more service centres and technology enhancements to the Service NSW electronic payment platform.

A new Service NSW payment platform that will include support for PayPal and, when it's available in Australia, Apple Pay is due to go live by the end of the year.
