Optus rolls out tri-band carrier aggregation to Melbourne

3x carrier aggregation offers speeds of up to 317Mbps

Optus has switched on tri-band carrier aggregation in Melbourne's CBD, the telco announced this morning.

Last month the telco began rolling out 3x carrier aggregation starting in the suburbs of Newcastle, NSW.

The telco is using 1xFDD + 2xTDD channels on the 2300MHz and 1800MHz spectrum bands. In Newcastle, the telco achieved speeds of up to 317 megabits per second using the technology.

To take advantage of the new technology, end users require category 9 devices. The first category 9 devices to hit Australia, the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ and Samsung Galaxy Note 5, will launch tomorrow.

Sydney's CBD will get tri-band carrier aggregation in early 2016. It will be switched on in Adelaide and Brisbane in mid-2016.

Optus already offers 2x carrier aggregation in parts of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart and Darwin as well as some regional centres.

Optus has also tested 4x carrier aggregation.

Telstra earlier this year rolled out tri-band carrier aggregation for parts of its network.
