Fujitsu releases new memory chip for 3G phones

Fujitsu on Thursday began shipping samples of a new memory chip designed to be used in small mobile devices, such as third-generation (3G) mobile phones, the company said.

The new chip combines all of the memory required by a cell phone in a single, multi-chip package, instead of the two chips currently found in most phones, the company said.

The product incorporates two 64M-bit flash memory chips, one 8M-bit SRAM (static RAM) chip, and one 32M-bit mobile FCRAM (fast cycle RAM) chip, a Fujitsu statement said. Mobile FCRAM is a low-power memory that uses a Fujitsu memory core and supports the SRAM interface, the statement said.

By reducing chips' power-consumption and a package size, the company targets the product at advanced mobile devices such as 3G handsets, which require faster, smaller and larger-capacity memory chips, it said. The company hopes to eventually sell 200,000 chips each month.

The new chip is shipping in sample quantities for 9,000 yen (US$72) per chip.
