Raikes explains Microsoft's BI plans

In a keynote address at the first Microsoft Business Intelligence Conference in Seattle earlier this month, Jeff Raikes, president of Microsoft's business division, said the explosion of data produced by businesses points to the need for business intelligence (BI) tools. Such tools can help executives interpret data and make decisions that align with overarching strategic goals, he said. In an interview with Computerworld at the show, Raikes talked about the company's PerformancePoint Server 2007, which is set to ship this summer, and about Microsoft's purchase of SoftArtisans's report-authoring tool.

Microsoft's Raikes on pervasive BI

In his opening-day keynote at the first Microsoft Business Intelligence Conference, Jeff Raikes, president of the Microsoft Business Division, noted the explosion of data being produced in most business today. That growth points to the need for business intelligence (BI) tools to help executives interpret data and make decisions that align with overarching strategic goals. But as the number of employees using BI tools expands, he said, companies are discovering the need to provide access to BI data to workers where they live -- mainly in Office tools. With that in mind, Raikes also announced that Microsoft's Office PerformancePoint Server 2007 -- the company's performance management server linking monitoring, analysis and planning -- will ship this summer. Computerworld spoke to Raikes at the conference.

SQL Server update will boost scalability

Sun set to open source Java products

Bob Brewin, software CTO at Sun Microsystems, said the company will discuss the state of its open-source plans for Java and present the first CommunityOne day for open source and Web developers at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco this week. In an interview with IDG, Brewin said that the company is on track to make all Java products available under the same General Public License (GPL) that Linux carries. He added that the company continues to mull over whether to make the Solaris operating system available under GPL. Solaris is now available under the Sun-created Community Development and Distribution License.
